Primary Science at St Christopher’s aims to ensure that all pupils develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through fun and exciting practical investigations. Most of what we know about how the world works was discovered, not by sitting in a chair and thinking hard, but by getting hands-on: pulling things apart, putting them back together, and testing out ideas. Practical science is all about ‘learning by doing’. St Christopher’s pupils achieve a deeper level of understanding by finding things out for themselves, and by experimenting with techniques and methods that have enabled the secrets of our bodies, our environment, and the whole universe – to be discovered.Science is taught by the pupil’s class teacher in Nursery to Year 6. Science in Nursery and Reception is taught through a cross-curricular topic themed approach. In Years 1 and 2, Science is taught for 90 minutes each week. In Years 3 to 6, pupils experience 2 hours of science every week. Science in Years 4, 5 and 6 is taught in one of two purpose-built science laboratories.
Our Science curriculum in Nursery and Reception follows the Understanding the World guidance in the Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage. Pupils make observations of animals and plants and talk about similarities, differences and changes.
Our Science curriculum in Years 1 to 6 follows the Science Programmes of Study in the National Curriculum for England 2014. This ensures that all pupils.
The national curriculum for science aims to ensure that all pupils:
- Develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
- Develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
- Are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.
All pupils take part in an annual Science Day. Everyone has fun learning about Science through exciting ‘hands on’ experiments and investigations planned and organised by the children. From sensory exploration of bugs in spaghetti to fabulous investigations using electric circuits, all pupils extend their Science knowledge and develop a real sense of the wonder of Science.
Trips and visiting speakers also enhance the Science curriculum, such as to the Bahrain Science Centre and local dentist.
