
Year 7 Debates, attended by all Year 7 students and Year 7 English teachers, took place on Sunday 26 June 2011 in the School Hall organised by Ms Zahida Aziz-Khan, Key Stage 3 English Co-ordinator. Two motions were debated: “This House believes that honesty is the best policy” and “This House believes that money can’t buy happiness”. In the first debate where the motion was carried by 69 votes to 48, the speakers in favour of the motion were Rushil Puri, Shawn Amirthan and Natalie Myatt and the speakers against were Ghazi Al Ruffai, Imogen Lunn and Samuel Hoar. In the second debate where the motion was also carried, the speakers in favour of the motion were Christopher Egan, Kianna Legg and Charlotte Vaandrager and the speakers against were Sofie Blankholm, Sofia Cortes-Murra and Amy Lewis. The Chairs were Zain Al Hoori and Daniah Mohieldin and the Time-keepers were Omar Hussain and Tamara Ahmed. The judges, who provided feedback on the speeches after each debate, were Mr Keeble, Ms Bridgman, Ms Chadwick and Musa-war Alam, Year 12. The judges were unanimous in their praise of the students’ skilful use of persuasive and sophisticated language and the willingness to prepare for and participate in such a formal event.
