The St Christopher’s Annual Career day took place at the senior school this week. Organised by SMT member Steve Keeble, the event is for year eleven students to get a better idea of career opportunities available to them before finally making the choices for their post 16 studies. There was a wide range of professions to choose from, with experts from the fields giving talks and advice to the students. Professions ranged from a Veterinary surgeon to a Military flying instructor. The event was kicked off by head teacher Nick Wilson who asked the students to keep an open mind about the opportunities available to them particularly as young people go through an average of 10-14 jobs in their lifetime. “Students were so unaware about my field, and it was great to be able to help them and tell them more about what it takes.” Mr Nassir Al Naji who is a Geologist specialising in Hydrocarbon exploration explained after talking to students about the different subjects they need to focus on to end up on a similar career path.

Students were also given the chance to ask questions and build their understanding of the different professions. “I really enjoyed looking at all the different options and I truly believe that I’ve found my dream career in architecture.” Bakheawer Haider from 11F. A couple of professionals from Davis and Langdon were so impressed with the amount of ideas that the students had. Mr. Alan Wallace highlighted the importance of good schooling, “ It’s good to help the kids drive into different aspects of their subjects, they need to understand that a good sound education will always open up a number of opportunities.” Mr. Wallace and his peer Mrs. Joy Groves handed out information packs to students which illustrated the amount of different opportunities available at a Global construction consultancy. Ammol Mohaphtra from took full advantage, “It was such a fresh experience and it really kept my options open.”
The career day was ultimately a great success and St Christopher’s would like to thank all the different professionals that came along for their inspirational words and the valuable time that they spent with students.
