Year 10 Formal Debate

On Monday 21 November 2011, the Year 10 Formal Debate took place in the Drama Hall. All Year 10 Students gathered to debate the Motion “This House believes that Teachers should be replaced by Computers”. Sarah Taylor and Salman Al Khalifa spoke in favour of the Motion and Shwan Adam and Olivia Wrigley spoke against the Motion. The Debate was chaired by Susan Verghese and Jack Pearce, the Timekeepers were Adam Hajszan and Jordan Icelli and invaluable technical support was provided by Jad Rehani. Following opening and closing addresses and comments from the Floor, students voted overwhelmingly in favour of the Motion with two abstentions. The four Speakers had prepared and honed their speeches over a number of weeks and had seriously practiced their delivery at the lectern to ensure that their stylish arguments were persuasive and coherent. Despite a certain understandable apprehension of standing before their peers, Sarah, Salman, Shwan and Olivia conducted themselves impeccably and spoke with an impressive degree of sophistication and eloquence. The Chairs and Timekeepers ensured the Debate ran smoothly with their calm authority and attention to detail. We are delighted by the willingness of the Year 10 students to participate in the Debate. They engaged very enthusiastically in this event and we are already looking forward to the next opportunity to debate a burning issue of the time.
