Many people would have happily informed you that the recent golf tournament at the Royal Golf Club was the biggest sporting event taking place in the Arabian peninsula over the last weekend in January. Many people would have been mistaken. On the perfect, carpet-like pitches of Rashid School for Boys in a very leafy suburb of Dubai, the St Chris U11 football team, under the direction of Headcoach, Mark Holness, and Director of Football, Ronan Armstrong, gave a display of total football on their way to successfully defending the Unity Cup.
Teams from across the Middle East gathered for the annual feast of football and by the final whistle at the end of play on Saturday evening, St Chris were confirmed as the top team once again. Undefeated in their competition, the boys showed the hard work they have been putting in on their fitness was paying dividends. Confidence on the ball, coupled with grit and determination was key to their success. Like any pundit worth his salt will tell you, statistics don’t lie and the numbers speak for themselves; 29 goals and 4 clean sheets in the 5 games played. Special mention must be made about the “Battle of Bahrain” a comprehensive 4-0 victory in the derby match against the British School which sealed the overall victory for St Chris. Ali Mattar won the golden boot for most goals, but this was most definitely a team effort and now the team heads with confidence to Doha for the BSME games in March , looking to secure an unprecedented treble to go along with the Unity Cup and BSME U11 Football Tournament trophies which have already been won this season.
