Seniors: Physical Education
 
Description
The PE Department consists of four specialist teaching staff that teach across the age and ability range. There is also input from other members of staff in Key Stages 4 & 5. The department is fully equipped for all aspects of the subject, including video and information communication technology equipment. The time allocation for Physical Education in all Key Stages is 5% and 15% for those pupils following the GCSE course in Key Stage four and the AS course in the 6th form. By teaching a variety of sporting activities, providing information and by assessment and evaluation, we aim to develop in pupils a positive attitude towards adopting a healthy lifestyle. There are opportunities for pupils to compete at House, School, National and International level in many sporting activities. In addition, well-supported clubs in recreational or non-competitive areas exist, and pupils are equally encouraged to take part for fitness or leisure, as well as for excellence. The department fulfills the requirements of the National Curriculum through a broad, balanced, relevant, progressive, differentiated and therefore challenging programme. It is also the intention of the department to promote and provide a learning environment whereby students become healthy, knowledgeable and physically literate via active participation.
 
Facilities
The Physical Education Department is well resourced both in terms of facilities, staff and equipment. Facilities: i)Sports Hall with 2 stores. There are 9 badminton courts (3 full size), 4 basketball courts (1 full size), 3 full size volleyball courts, a 5-a-side football pitch and a full size netball court. The hall has girls, boys, and staff changing rooms with showers and also has separate toilet facilities. ii)Staff Office iii)Sports Laboratory Outside areas iv)3 tennis court, 2 netball courts. v)Outdoor 25m swimming pool vi)2 soccer pitches (offsite), 1 artificial cricket wicket, 1 long jump pit, 1 discus circle and one shot putt circle. The Department also makes use of a variety of local facilities these are: i)The Rugby Club ii)The Yacht Club (Sailing and Scuba Diving) iii)The Golf Course iv)The Country Club (Squash, Weight Training and Racketball) v)The Bowling Centre. The Department holds enough sports equipment to ensure maximum participation for our students at all levels.
 
Courses
Students in years 7 to 9 have 1 lesson of 1 hour 20 minutes. They study Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Cricket, Football, Gymnastics, Rounders, Swimming, Tennis, Volleyball and Water Polo. In years 10 and 11 student follow an 'options' system of Physical Education. As well as the activities covered in years 7 to 9 they also cover units in Aerobics, Bowling, Rugby, Squash and Weight Training. This is also 1 hour 20 minutes per week. There is a GCSE in Physical Education Option for students in years 10 and 11 giving a further 2 hours and 40 minutes of Physical Education a week. 6th Form Physical Education also follows an options system with all the above activities offered as well as Golf, Horse Riding and Scuba Diving. Students in the 6th form can also study AS Physical Education over a period of 2 years.
 
Career Routes
GCSE and Advanced Subsidiary Physical Education opens many doors to our students. If they wished to follow Physical Education or Sports Science at a Degree level this option is available at many Universities Worldwide. Physical Education encompasses a variety of areas. A large part of this is Science based, Anatomy and Physiology Specifically. A grounding in Human Biology will aid any student wishing to follow Careers in Physiotherapy or those wishing to be future Doctors. A Physical Education background also offers opportunities in the ever growing Leisure industry, be it Management or Coaching. Students may wish to follow a Sports Journalism background or even participate in a sport professionally. Be it a Nutritionist or Sports Psychologist, the opportunities a Physical Education pathway gives you are endless.
