Seniors: Media Studies

Description
Media Studies is a relatively new subject in the senior school but has already proved to be a popular choice with our sixth form students. The study of the media is concerned with five main areas known as the Key Concepts. These cover all aspects of media production, distribution and consumption, from the examination of media representations, media language and audience to ideology, values and institution. Media Studies is about much more than simply observing and watching the television; we explore how and why the media is created and what effect it has on the millions who consume it everyday. Students are encouraged to question what they read, hear and watch, challenging their preconceptions and the dominant ideologies of the societies in which they live. One of the main draws of the subject is practical work, which is a major feature of every Media Studies course. During this work our students gain a deeper understanding of how the media works as well as developing the ability to work in a cooperative team.

Facilities
Media Studies is housed in one classroom, which is shared with English. We have a developing library of academic books relating to the study of the media. Although we do have some student text books, we do not issue one as a matter of course; as the media is in a constant state of change, text books date very quickly. In addition to a growing library of DVDs and videos, we have access to a digital video camera and editing software.

Courses

At present we only offer AQA AS Media Studies, delivered over two years. This involves the completion of three units: Unit 1, Reading the Media; Unit 2,Textual Topics in Contemporary Media and Unit 3, Practical Production. The method of assessment is a combination of examination and coursework.

Career Routes
Many Media students continue their study at university reading a range of subjects from Communication Studies to Film Studies. Competition for employment in the media sector is fierce; only the tough and determined succeed!

Student Quotes
"Media Studies has changed the way I watch television. I am constantly trying to work out what the producer's point of view is and how he is trying to manipulate me"

"Media is much more demanding than I first thought. You have to forget what you like or dislike and analyse media in a detached and academic way"

"Practical work is fantastic, but incredibly time consuming! It's worth it though!"
