Seniors: English

Description
There are nine teachers of English in the senior school; several of these teachers also have demanding roles within the school but never lose sight of their commitment to their students and to their subject! We enjoy a high level of exam success at all levels and the subject is popular. The English Department teaches all students up to Year 13.

Facilities
The English Department has a suite of rooms on the first floor of the new building. As well as our 8 classrooms (one is shared with PSE) we also have access to space which is ideal for Speaking and Listening rehearsals and recordings. Our classrooms are comfortable, if cosy. Display is an especially important part of our work. Often constructed by the students themselves, displays reflects our curriculum and provide a motivational learning environment. We are lucky to be on the same floor as the largest ICT room, which we often use, and the library; the library is, understandably, an especially valuable resource.

Pre-16, we deliver programmes of study appropriate to Key Stages 3 and 4 of the National Curriculum. All students sit a NAT exam in the May of Year 9, the last year of KS 3; a large proportion will also opt to take the Extension Paper. At KS 4, all students are entered for GCSE English and English Literature where they are assessed through exams and coursework, both written and spoken. Post-16, we currently offer a combined Advanced Level course in English Language and Literature but are hoping also to expand our range with Media Studies and, perhaps, English Literature alone. Student interest will be a deciding factor!

Career Routes
We try to furnish each of our students with a standard of literacy which will make them a valuable acquisition in the workplace. More specialised study post-16 gives students the opportunity to follow a vast range of undergraduate courses leading again to a wide range of careers: from journalist to lawyer to teacher. The sky is the limit!

Student Quotes

"I've really enjoyed the discussions. I've learnt that there is no right answer and that all people's opinions should be respected."

"The teachers we have can be firm, but that is so that everyone can be listened to. They are also wise and encouraging. Sometimes their jokes are hard to understand, though."

"I started English as a fourth A Level. Suddenly, it has climbed to second or first!"

"I think it's the teachers' enthusiasm that really has won me over. The teachers I've had have also been very kind and clever."

"E - entertaining; N - never boring; G - good for you; L - literature that challenges; I - incredibly hard-working; S - supportive; H - humorous. Thank you, English!"
