Seniors: Arabic

Introduction
The Arabic language has today assumed the status of an international language. It is spoken by nearly 225 million people in more than 20 Arab countries. In addition, about 900 million Muslims around the world learn Arabic as a second language.

Description
There are four teachers of Arabic and Islam in the Senior School. The Arabic Department teaches Arabic and Islam including non-Arab Muslims. In the Junior School, we have six teachers for Arabic and Islam with special emphasis on learning support. And recently, we have introduced classes of Arabic for non-Arabs, which are developing well and quite popular among junior pupils at St.Christopher's. All our teachers are well-qualified Bahraini teachers.

Facilities
The Arabic Department has a suite of rooms on the second floor of the new building. The classrooms are comfortable and equipped with all resources needed to develop the learning process. In the Junior School, we have a block of 4 rooms.

Courses

The school uses the Ministry of Education course where we believe, such course are excellent to link our students with their environment, culture and history. However, students are entered for GCSE Arabic at the end of year 9. In year 10 and 11 students follow a course, which lead to a qualification in Advanced Level or Advanced Subsidiary Level Arabic at the end do year 11. Such courses give our students excellent opportunities to Arab and non-Arab universities in future.

The aims of the A level syllabus are:

  • develop understanding of written form of the language from a variety of registers
  • communicate confidently, clearly and imaginatively in language through the written word, using increasingly accurate, complex and varied language
  • increase the student's sensitivity to language and language learning
  • develop critical insight into, and contact with, the contemporary society, culture background and heritage of countries and communities wherein the language is spoken
  • develop positive attitude to language learning

The course also:

  • provides a suitable foundation for further study and/or practical use of the language
  • provides a coherent satisfying and worthwhile course of study for students who do not progress to further study in the subject
  • provides a sufficient basis for the further study of Arabic at degree level or equivalent
  • focuses on Arab history, media, culture and socio-cultural aspects of the language

Career Routes
We try to furnish each of our students with a standard of Arabic, which will make them a valuable acquisition in the workplace. More specialised study post-16 gives students the opportunity to follow a vast range of undergraduate courses leading a gain to a wide range of careers.
