English, Year 9

Aims of the course:
The units of study meet the objectives of the National Framework for English Teaching and the programmes of study of the English National Curriculum Orders.

St Christopher’s English Department aim to:

  • Encourage students to enjoy reading a wide range of texts, and develop analytical skills
  • Ensure that students are aware of audience, purpose and format, and can adapt their writing accordingly
  • Encourage students to express their opinions and justify their comments formally as well as in class discussions
  • Enable students to be open-minded and gain a better understanding of their own and other cultures through the study of literature and media
  • Prepare students thoroughly so that they can confidently tackle the end of year.

Term 1

  • Fiction: A novel or collection of short stories
  • Poetry: Comparison of contemporary poetry

Term 2

  • Shakespeare
  • Preparing for Key Stage 3 Examination reading and writing paper

Term 3

  • Final preparations: Key Stage 3 Tests
  • Media Unit

Assessment
Students are assessed according to the following framework:

  • There will be a variety of assessments at the end of each unit: with a written outcome, an oral presentation or a reading comprehension.
  • Students will be vigorously prepared for their Eng of Key Stage 3 Tests and complete numerous practice papers and formal Mock Examinations. Their final exam will be marked externally.
