Art

Here at St Christopher’s, the visual arts are a very important part of the curriculum. Students in Years 3 and 4 are taught Art in the classroom by their Class Teacher.  Students in Years 5 and 6 participate in specialist art lessons each week, outside of their regular classroom work. Throughout the year, students learn to develop skills in sketching, drawing, painting, and printmaking. Students are also exposed to artists of the past, looking to the masters as inspiration for their own work. The projects focus on the development of ideas leading towards a final project, where a variety of materials and techniques are used correctly.

Year 5
Students create cityscape paintings, self portraits and prints all influenced by a variety of artists from around the world. With each project, students learn how to follow instructions, participate in lesson demonstrations, and use their sketchbook as an important tool to develop their visual ideas. Each piece of artwork is created by challenging their artistic abilities, creativity and stretching their imaginations. During the year, students strengthen their artistic abilities and expand their understanding of the elements and principles of art.

Year 6
Students build on the abilities and skills developed in Year 5. Students create abstract self portraits in the style of Pablo Picasso, large oil pastel drawings inspired by Georgia O’Keefe and sculptures influenced by Alberto Giacometti. With each project, students learn how to follow instructions, participate in lesson demonstrations, and use their sketchbook as an important tool to develop their visual ideas. During the year, students strengthen their artistic abilities and expand their understanding of the elements and principles of art.
