| Infants: Physical
Development |
| |
We
focus on developing physical control,
mobility, awareness of space and
manipulative skills in indoor and
outdoor environments. Here at St
Christopher's we have PE lessons
for our Nursery children. They have
lessons both in the hall and outdoors
on the large climbing equipment
in addition to daily outdoor play
when they can use sit and ride toys
and use climbing frames. We aim
to have the children use small and
large equipment with increasing
skill. The development of gross
motor skills and fine motor skills
is approached in a planned and organised
way. In the development of gross
motor skills the children explore
and enjoy movement, they control
body movement, change speed and
direction, match and copy actions
and sequences and experiment with
apparatus and equipment. In the
development of fine motor skills
the children use equipment and activities
which are already outlined in the
section on preparation for writing.

Physical
play - the exploration of space
through running, jumping, swinging,
climbing, twisting, turning and
rolling activities that children
enjoy, gives them the foundations
of a later understanding of technology,
engineering and physics. Pushing
and pulling wheeled vehicles in
the playground teaches them about
physical forces. They will also
learn how to judge speed and distance
and move with safety in the outdoor
environment. Physical play provides
them with much needed challenges
and adventure in safe surroundings.
