Infants: Knowledge and Understanding of the World
We aim to develop the child's knowledge of the environement, other people and features of the man-made world.  We want to provide a foundation for scientific and technological learning.

We can encourage them to think about and predict what might happen in various situations - to observe carefully and if they are able to verbalise any conclusions they have drawn from the results.

We want the children to develop a caring attitude towards the natural world.

They are introduced to:

  • Categories of plants and animals
  • Names of plants and animals
  • Parts of the body
  • The senses
  • Tactile aspects of common materials
  • Forces are explored by pulling/ pushing toys and by playing with magnets
  • Changes in materials, for example as a result of the application of heat in baking
  • Healthy living, personal safety and hygiene
The children find out about and identify the uses of everyday technology and use information and communication technology and programmable toys to support their learning.

They are given opportunities to cut paper, material and felt, card and junk materials. They stick things together using a variety of materials eg PVA, water paste, glue sticks, masking tape. They use various modelling materials, playdough, plasticine, clay and papier mache. They prepare food e.g. soup, cakes, biscuits, sandwiches. They have the opportunity to use hammer and nails. They thread with laces and beads.. They use many construction toys: lego, duplo, interlocking building bricks, popoids.

We can encourage the children to plan by asking questions like 'how can we?' and what are you going to make?' We encourage evaluation by orally recapping the sequence of events in making and by giving their oral opinion about the finished product.
