Infants: Communication, Language and Literacy

Speaking and listening

  • We encourage children to join in action songs.
  • There are lots of opportunities for children to join in during circle time.
  • Each week the children have a new 'Chatting Chum.'  They complete much of their work with that person.
  • Children are encouraged to express their needs in words and questions.
  • They are encouraged to say 'please' and 'thank you.'
  • Every classroom has at least one role play area.
  • There is a listening centre in every room.

 

Phonics

  • Letter sounds are taught using a scheme called Fast Phonics.
  • The children are introduced to two new sounds every week, with a review week after every six sounds.
  • The children are taught through a multisensory approach by learning the songs, actions and correct letter formation for each sound.
  • Computer software linked to the Fast Phonics scheme is used to reinforce the sounds and word building skills.
  • The children use magnetic boards to practise word building and alphabetical order.

Reading

  • The children read from a range of graded reading schemes including Oxford Reading Tree.
  • They read twice a week in school from these schemes.
  • Children select a book from an appropriate level to take home to share with a parent.
  • They also take home a library book each week.
  • Key words are taken home weekly to help the children to increase their sight vocabulary in reading.

Writing

  • The correct formation of the letters are explicitly taught to the children in line with the teaching of the phonics.
  • Children are encouraged to write independently in a variety of genre.
  • As the year progresses children are taught explicit skills such as correct sentence structure and basic punctuation.
