Welcome to Swimming

Boasting the most impressive training facilities of any school in the Gulf region, St Christopher’s pupils benefit from the use of a 25m indoor pool with attached shallow training pool. Reception to Year 2 curriculum swim lessons last for 30 minutes and take place every week throughout the school year. Year 3 to Year 6 curriculum lessons last for one hour and take place every other half term. Pupils in Years 3 to 6 also have the opportunity to complete in long distance swimming awards, ranging from 400m-5000m.

The swimming curriculum follows the ASA Learn to Swim Framework.  The ASA Learn to Swim Framework uses fun and games to take children from their first splash to full competence in the water through 10 stages. It’s underpinned throughout by Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) principles, with clear progression between each stage. It includes all aquatic disciplines, and pupils move from developing basic movement skills, water confidence and safety awareness to refining techniques for all four strokes and finally towards developing quality stroke technique over longer distances.

The framework allows our qualified PE specialist swim teachers and swim coaches to deliver consistent lessons with measurable progress markers.

Annual inter-House swim galas take place for pupils in Year 1 to Year 6. Reception students have the opportunity to show their swimming skills to their parents during a demonstration lesson and Nursery have a splash day to familiarize themselves with the pool surroundings.

Our advanced swimmers can take part in trials for the Swim Squad, called the ‘Sharks’. Our squad is split into mini teams, each team having access to a different level of training depending on their standard. Some Swim Squad teams train every day, while others have the opportunity to train twice a week.

St Christopher’s Swim Squad attends three Bahrain based competitions and around six overseas swim meets a year. Some of these competitions are open to all members of the Squad while others have qualifying times to enter. Recent overseas competitions have included H2O in Doha, Muscat International in Oman, BSME Swimming Championships, BSME Games and The Middle East Unity Cup.
