Welcome to the Drama Department

In the Senior School Drama is a discrete subject, and is available to every year group from Year 7 to Year 13. At KS3 the pupils have Drama for a double lesson every week, in which they have the opportunity to explore roles through improvisation, role play and script work. This encourages compassion and the ability to place themselves in other people’s shoes. They develop their team working and cooperation skills – abilities which are vital for every area of school life and beyond. They learn about theatre and explore ideas and themes.

Thinking creatively and solving problems is an integral part of Drama, and the aim is that Drama will play a role in helping all pupils to develop into thoughtful, well rounded and inventive young adults. In Year 10, GCSE Drama is a popular option and in the Sixth Form the pupils can opt for A Level Drama and Theatre Studies.

The Drama department has two spaces: a fully equipped Drama Hall with theatre lighting and sound, and a smaller studio space. Both are used for teaching and the Drama Hall is also used for performances.

The department offers several educational visits each year including the very popular London Drama and Art trip for Years 10 to 13. We also attend BSME and ISTA festivals when the opportunity arises. Our extra-curricular drama provision includes a yearly whole school production; over recent years these have included performances of  ‘Grease’, ‘The Boyfriend’, ‘Guys and Dolls’, ‘Arabian Nights’, ‘Dracula Spectacula!’ and ‘Les Miserables’. There are also opportunities to take part in Drama and Dance Clubs. We are proud to achieve high academic standards in Drama combined with excellent public performance work, in an environment that is creative and encouraging.
