All Year Two classes follow aspects of the Renewed Framework for Literacy supported by the National Literacy Strategy. This incorporates speaking and listening, reading, phonics, spelling handwriting and writing. Where relevant, links are made with other subjects to enhance pupil’s learning and broaden their learning experience.
Speaking and listening
Children are encouraged to speak clearly using a rich and varied vocabulary. They are also taught the importance of listening carefully to others and responding appropriately.
Reading
Children are exposed to a wide variety of literary materials in order to develop interest and pleasure in reading. Several schemes are available but reading tends to be less 'scheme' orientated and more 'banded' with children selecting from within an appropriate range of books. Year Two children are encouraged to read for more sustained periods of time and books are sent home on a daily basis to be shared with parents. Independent use of the Library is encouraged and this facility is also utilised by children and parents before and after school.
Phonics and Spelling
Children learn and revise the spelling of the High Frequency Words and they also learn to use phonological skills and knowledge. Children are encouraged to apply this when writing independently.
Handwriting
The children continue to develop the continuous cursive style of handwriting as introduced in Year 1 and are expected to use the cursive style in all writing .
Writing
Children are taught to write two main types of text: narrative and non-fiction. The range of forms of writing include story writing, poems, play scripts, notes, lists, instructions, letters, invitations and information books. Children's imaginative writing develops and they are encouraged to structure their work and consider the audience for which they are writing.
Big Writing is a special time where children have the opportunity to write independently for a sustained period. This writing is celebrated and provides the children with next steps to learning in the form of writing targets. Big Writing takes place on a regular basis.
