Retired Sergeant Michael Allen, formerly of the Royal Military Police, spent several hours at the school observing lessons and talking to a Year 9 class as they learned about the differences between soldiers on the front line and their leaders in World War 1. At lunch time, Sergeant Allen, regaled many more students with tales of his exploits throughout his quarter of a century of military service.
In the early part of his career, Sergeant Allen saw service in Kenya, France and Borneo. He then spent many years alternating between Northern Ireland and Germany and was awarded the Accumulated Campaign Service Medal as a result. Towards the end of his military career, he worked with Special Intelligence in South Armagh, a job which he particularly enjoyed. On leaving the Army he worked as a Scenes of Crimes officer with the Kent police for 5 years and as a Security Adviser, advising a number of companies on City and West End security.

In between mixing cement, painting and carrying bricks, students also packed in a wide range of adventure activities including rafting, rock climbing, archery and team building exercises. Local culture was also sampled with visits to a hilltop temple, Thai cookery classes and a morning’s trek to visit a mountain tribe based in the forest close to the Burmese border. But for many the highlight of the trip was working and playing alongside the Thai children at BanPongHai school. Despite the language barrier, our students played games and sports with the infant and junior school children and we were treated to a fantastic ceremony of thanks at the end of the week led by the school principal. Our relationship with this area of Thailand is now in its 6th year and many of the students have been so enthused by this experience that they are already planning fundraising activities in advance of a return journey in 2013. Our aim is to raise money to sponsor a child for 3 years of their education, watch this space! Well done to everyone who took part.

These people also include doctors and nurses who take care of us when we are unwell. Reception children planned and helped to design the new St Christopher’s Clinic, a role-play area where you can take care of ill teachers, friends, toys and baby dolls.
Four St Christopher’s students, currently studying for their GCSEs, were afforded the privilege of meeting with the Russian Federation Ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain, Mr Victor Smirnov, on Tuesday 25 September 2012. The meeting focussed on a discussion of a range of issues relating to the subject of Media Freedom from the perspective of the Russian Federation. The Year 11 students, Bassam Al Alawi, Danyal Qureshi, Marc Kalis and Said Husseini, are very much hoping to take part in the North American International Model United Nations (NAIMUN) Conference in Washington DC in February 2013. As places are limited, the four boys took the initiative to ask if they could discuss their research topic with the Ambassador and were delighted by the Ambassador’s generosity in devoting one hour to a discussion and responding to the their questions. The students benefited enormously from their visit to the Embassy as their NAIMUN presentations and applications have most certainly been enhanced. Without doubt, they are even more motivated and inspired to deepen their understanding of the international political arena. This was a unique opportunity for the students who remain indebted to the Ambassador for his support and encouragement.

Year 2 children had the opportunity to apply to be a Student Councilor. The Infant School Student Council is made up of a boy and a girl from each Year 2 class. The Council meets regularly with Mr Fellows and discusses ways that they think will make St Christopher’s School a better place.

Student Councilors were elected by their class mates, who considered who would be the best at listening to others and talking confidently in front of their class or in front of children in assembly. The candidates had to prepare and deliver a speech to their class and then a secret ballot was held to decide the winners.
Students of all ages were encouraged to enter a Peace Logo Design Competition. The winning design, by Rumi Itakura in Year 9, was printed on the Peace T-Shirts which were worn by the Year 10 students throughout the day. All Year Groups joined in making Peace Pinwheels and wrote peaceful quotes on them. The Pinwheels were planted around the school gardens and are still spinning beautifully around the Peace Pole. To further enhance awareness of World Peace Day, the students read their Peace Poems over the PA system each morning. A Volleyball match versus the staff was played and students wore white Peace Ribbons. An aerial photo was taken of the Year 10 students who created the word TRUCE and Year 12 students, Amy Bonar and Lynn Abu Khadra, read The St Christopher’s School Peace Poem at noon, which was followed by a minute’s silence observed by the Whole School. The students will also have the opportunity to be involved in a Skype Conference with Mr Jeremy Gilley, the founder of Peace Day, on 3 October 2012.

Students and staff dressed up in 1960s style attire to enjoy a day rich with 1960s nostalgia. In the lead-up to the event, a range of Year Group assemblies had set the scene for what proved to be a fun and memorable celebration of the School's 50th Year. Following an opening address by Mr Nick Wilson, Head of Senior School, the specially arranged whole school assembly opened with a sentimental photographic walk down the school’s memory lane, followed by a rousing student Rock Band live performance. Swinging Sixties themed lessons ran throughout the day and the highlight for many was a lunchtime 1960s ‘Bop’ at which students of all years danced their hearts away to the classic sounds of The Beatles, The Who, The Rolling Stones and many more. The day was a further uplifting and fitting way to mark such a significant moment in the school’s rich history.
